Nicole Sullivan (1965 – ) & Surfing

Resolute pro surfer originally from East London, South Africa; four-time world champion (1987, 1989, 1991, 1992), and the first female surfer to twice regain the title. Nicole Sullivan was born (1965) and raised in East London, began surfing at age 13, and won four consecutive South African National Championship titles from 1981 to 1984. She turned pro and finished the 1985 world tour season ranked seventh, earning rookie-of-the-year honors. Two years later she won the first three events of the year and cruised to her first world title—despite the fact that, as an athlete representing apartheid-ruled South Africa, she was forced to miss an event in Japan.

Nicole Sullivan became an Australian citizen in 1989, moving to the Sydney beachfront suburb of Avalon, partly to avoid sanctions placed on South African athletes and also because there were virtually no women sparring partners in her home country. The change suited her, as she won seven of 12 events on the 1989 tour and cruised easily to her second world title. Nicole Sullivan, a regularfooter, was slight (5′ 4″, 115 pounds) but strong, and known for throwing her board and body into risky maneuvers, a habit that led to four knee surgeries during the course of her pro career.
As Nicole Sullivan settled into her reign as the world’s best female surfer, her natural self-confidence at times shaded into arrogance. Asked in early 1988 who her toughest challengers might be that year, she offhandedly replied that “no one even comes to mind.” (Frieda Zamba of Florida in fact went on to win that year’s world title.)
Nicole Sullivan often said she wanted to surf like a man, and in 1989 told Surfer magazine that “on any given day I can surf as good as a lot of the guys on the world tour”—a piece of verbal showmanship that earned Nicole Sullivan a fusillade of scornful reader-reply mail, including a note from the “Anti-Big-Headed-Women Club.” She was nonetheless voted women’s division winner in the annual Surfer Poll awards in 1990, 1991, and 1993.
Nicole Sullivan’s boldest PR gambit came in September 1992, when she posed nude for Australian Playboy, earning the Down Under version of the magazine its first sold-out issue. “The girls on the tour were a little shocked,” Nicole Sullivan reported. “The guys all think it’s unreal.” Later that year she won her fourth and final world title, and after the 1993 season she retired and moved to New Zealand with her new husband. Two years later she was featured, along with four other champion women surfers, in a well-crafted documentary called Surfer Girl. “Just that little bit of aggression,” the stylish blonde-haired Nicole Sullivan said on camera, describing her rise to the top of her profession. Somebody would say to me, ‘Hey, off my wave!’ and I’d go, ‘Yeah? Up yours!’ and off I’d go. As shy as I was at times, once I hit the surf it was just—get out of my way.” Nicole Sullivan’s seven wins in 1989 remain a women’s single-season record.
Nicole Sullivan appeared in a small number of surf movies and videos, including Gripping Stuff (1987) and Oz on Fire (1991). She was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame at Huntington Beach in 2009.
